Most people register with one vet clinic and assume that's the whole picture. In practice, a pet's care is rarely handled by a single vet for life: there's the regular GP-style clinic, an emergency or after-hours clinic for the one time something happens outside business hours, and, for a meaningful share of pets, a specialist referral at some point for cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics or oncology.

Three reasons keeping vet details organised matters more than it seems:

1. Emergency clinics are not the same as your regular vet, and finding out during a crisis costs time. After-hours and emergency veterinary clinics typically operate as separate practices with their own intake process, and they won't have your pet's history unless it's shared with them. Veterinary emergency guidance is consistent on one point: time to treatment affects outcome in genuine emergencies (toxic ingestion, bloat, trauma), so knowing which clinic to go to, and having their number and address ready, before it's needed removes one entire step from a moment when minutes count.
2. Specialist referrals create information gaps if not tracked. When a primary vet refers a pet to a specialist, care temporarily splits across two practices that may not automatically share full records with each other, especially across different clinic software systems. Owners who keep their own record of who referred what, and what the specialist recommended, are the ones who effectively hold the full picture, because no single clinic necessarily does.
3. Repeated vets and multiple providers increase (not decrease) the risk of medication duplication. The more vets involved in a pet's care over time (regular vet, locum, emergency clinic, specialist), the higher the documented risk of the same medication being prescribed twice, or two drugs being combined that shouldn't be (e.g. certain NSAIDs alongside corticosteroids). Keeping a consolidated view of who prescribed what is one of the simplest ways an owner can catch this before it becomes a problem.
